Lake Windermere Challenge 2025

Ericka Willis
On 10th August 2025, 11 of our regular open water swimmers took a trip to Lake Windermere and took on the challenge of swimming the full length of the lake.

We achieved this with 2 relay teams of 5 swimmers - Team 1 Chloe Ashcroft (11), Ellie Bull (9), Eve Monaghan (13), Evan Hale (15), Sam Potter (15) and Team 2 Noeh Smith (11), Adomos Rudys (11), Joshua Bodsworth (15), Zoe Aly Weston (11), Elsie Lawn (11) plus Aimee Aly-Weston (aged 15) who swam the full length on her own.

This is a huge achievement, as the lake is no less than 10.5 miles long. The first boat with 5 swimmers accompanied by Mieke Foster (Chairperson/coach) and Nathan Bull (Team Manager) set off from Ambleside at 6.20am and swam all the way to Fellfoot as part of a relay team. There was lots of banter, giggling but also lots of very serious swimming. Their team work was excellent. They arrived at Fellfoot just after lunchtime, at which time the 2nd relay team, the individual swimmer and Head Coach Ericka Willis started their swim back to Ambleside. Again, these swimmers worked as a team brilliantly. They managed to arrive in plenty of time before the sun set. Whilst having fun, they were raising money towards our funds for our regular open water training at Hatfield.

Huge congratulations to our swimmers, as they did a smashing job and were a pleasure to be around for many, many hours. Thank you to SwimYourSwim, who organised the challenge for us, to all the parents for supporting their swimmers and for the help they have given to the club, and also to the team at home, for their dedication and still facilitating regular pool training for the swimmers who train in the pool only!
